VAN LIVING 1971 – Designing a Life is the story of two young designers, Gay and Jack Reineck, beginning a life together. After meeting at the Aspen Design Conference in 1970 on a Sunday, Jack proposed on Tuesday. Only months later, they decided to outfit a VW van in London and set out on the dream of adventure. Living in the van for the next twelve months, and 25,000 miles, the couple drove through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, to India and back. Along the way they created an enduring relationship that would last for more than 50 years. Back in the U.S. in 1972, they settled in San Francisco’s Cole Valley, began a design business and later a publishing business, RufusGuides, specializing in the design of custom maps.
Jack and Gay have been Cole Hardware customers and neighbors since returning from their trip and settling into Cole Valley in 1972.
